What Tariq Saw

The follow-up deployment was logged as routine.

That was the system's word — routine monitoring, novel failure site, two-witness protocol — and it was technically accurate: the gates had been restored by the maintenance team, the pressure differential normalised, the array cycling within specification. What the system was asking them to monitor was whether the anomaly recurred, and in three weeks it had not. She understood, without having been told, that the system was still assembling its category for the failure. The reclassification was pending. The deployment log still read Category: Unknown.

Tariq was on the maintenance platform when she arrived. He had come up on the earlier boat — she saw his bag at the platform edge, his notebook already open on the railing, his handwriting moving across a page she could not read from where she was standing.

She ran the deployment check. Mesh active. Tablet online. Data connection confirmed.

The morning was clear and cold, the kind of February morning that had no weather — just brightness and stillness and the mangrove walls on either side holding the light without absorbing it. The barrier array cycled through its sequence. The three gates that had locked four weeks ago were cycling with the others now, indistinguishable, the anomaly stored somewhere in the system and nowhere in the hardware.

She walked to where Tariq was standing.

He did not look up. He was noting something — she could see how his attention sat, directed toward the second gate housing, the same sector she had sat beside in the dark at six in the morning four weeks ago with the plain-text question on her tablet. She let him finish. The mesh read. The tablet updated. She noted the timestamp and looked at the data stream filing into the classification system in real time, the readings clean and within specification, nothing flagged.

After a few minutes Tariq closed the notebook and looked at the gates.

'I know what caused this,' he said.

She waited.

'The embankment design.' He gestured toward the second gate housing without pointing at it directly — the gesture of someone indicating a structural relationship, not a location. 'The original specifications — the 2031 installation — they used a modular foundation system. Pre-cast segments, standard at the time. The segments have a resonance frequency. Specific tidal pressure patterns can drive a harmonic. Not often. The conditions have to be right — a precise tidal coefficient, combined with a certain silting profile along the embankment base.' He paused. 'When it happens, the gate drive mechanism reads the resonance as a mechanical fault and holds position. It doesn't fail. It responds correctly to false data.'

He said this plainly, without inflection, looking at the gates.

'How do you know this?' she said.

'My father's generation built this embankment.' He turned the notebook over in his hands. 'Not a person of them wrote it down. They understood it the way you understand something you live with for twenty years. You feel the structure moving under certain conditions and you learn what it means.' He looked at the gate housing again. 'One of his colleagues described it to me. I was twenty-three. I understood maybe half of what he said. I've been reconstructing the other half since.'

The mesh read. The tablet updated. None of this was in the data stream.

She looked at the tablet. She looked at Tariq.

'Say it again,' she said. 'Slower.'

He looked at her.

'The resonance frequency,' she said. 'The tidal coefficient. The silting profile. Say it again from the beginning.'

He said it again. She typed as he spoke — not into the mesh data field, not into the session log. She opened the manual input field she had never used before, the one for supplementary observations, and typed what he said as he said it. The tidal coefficient range. The silting profile conditions. The modular foundation resonance frequency, expressed in terms he gave her — not in hertz, not in the system's unit architecture, but in the descriptive language of someone who had learned it from someone who had felt it.

When he finished she read it back to him once, quietly, correcting two details where she had not kept up.

Then she added a note at the top of the field: Human observation. Pre-system knowledge. Unverified. Please test.

She submitted it.

They stood at the platform railing. The array cycled. A wading bird — she didn't know the species, had never learned them — moved along the mudflat to the east, unhurried, stopping at intervals, moving on. The February light was flat and even across the water.

Four minutes and eleven seconds.

The tablet showed the classification update.

Pattern analysis complete. Hypothesis confirmed — confidence: 91.4%. Novel failure reclassified: Category 4 / Harmonic Resonance / Historical Design. Classification basis: submitted observation cross-referenced with embankment foundation specification archive, tidal coefficient modelling, historical silting data 2031–2045. Reclassification logged.

She read it. Then she turned the tablet so Tariq could see it.

He read it. He was still for a moment. Then he looked back at the gates.

'Ninety-one point four,' he said.

'Yes.'

He nodded once, slowly, at nothing in particular.

She looked at the classification notice again. The system had confirmed his knowledge and absorbed it — the pattern matched, the archive supported it, the historical data held. The failure was now understood. It had a category. It would be watched for, detected earlier, corrected faster. The knowledge that had lived in one person for thirty years, reconstructed imperfectly from a conversation he'd half-understood at twenty-three, was now in the system.

The classification notice listed its sources: embankment specification archive, tidal modelling, silting data. It did not list the source of the submitted observation. There was no field for that.

She closed the tablet.

Tariq picked up his notebook from the railing. He put it into his bag. He checked the clasp — pressed it once, the mechanism engaging cleanly — and then checked it again, his thumb running over the closure a second time in a motion that had no function, that the clasp had not asked for.

The array cycled. The morning held its stillness. Somewhere further along the embankment the maintenance platform creaked in the current, and then was quiet.
